Wall decor is one of my favorite projects to DIY.

The book wall I made a few months back is one example.

Is it just me, or does it seem that wall art tends to usually be on the pricy side? That’s another reason making it myself is so appealing. When I clicked of the wall planter I saw on Pinterest it took me to Etsy where it was selling for $90! I took that as a challenge to see how much it would cost me to make my own.

While I was at it, I also wanted to try my hands at the wooden hanging shelves that are all the rage.

What you’ll need & how to make the plant hanger:

plants for hanging planter

We made our plant hanger 23″x13″, but this can vary depending on the size of your pots. I’d suggest purchasing your pots first, setting them out and deciding spacing and basing your measurements off that.

To give the frame strength make sure to glue as well as nail the boards together. Our plant holder ended up weighing about ten pounds when it was completed.

To make the corners cut the pieces at 45 degree angles.

If you don’t have the option to cut at home, you can have most lumber stores cut to size. Most likely they won’t cut the edges at an angle, but you can still use flat edges to made the sides, they just won’t have that picture frame cut.

My husband said the whole project took about 30 minutes to put together.

Once he was done with the frame he handed it off to be and I got busy!

Putting together the planters

This part was fun, thought the macrame was a bit challenging at first. You have to play around with this a bit to get the right size for your specific planter or bowl. I made the first two incorrectly. They were way too small.

For a great tutorial on how to assemble this easy style of macrame hanger, I followed this. The only difference was I knotted the top because I didn’t want a ring that would end up adding length.

Once the hangers were done I put the pots in, hung them up, then trimmed the plants and set them into the planters. Originally I thought I’d have to hot glue them into place, but they actually set in just fine. The macrome hanger helped to hold them into the spots I wanted.

With that part done I screwed the wall hangers into the back three inches from the top on both sides, and hung it up! (Hindsight I should have done this part first, it would have been easier.) 😉

D-Ring Hangers

I decided to do an accent wall in our master with several plant holders/shelves. It’s a clean and fresh look that I really enjoy in that space.

That’s it for this plant hanger, below is the tutorial for the wood shelves which were even easier to put together!

What you’ll need for wooden hang shelves & how to assemble

Honestly, we have so much extra wood laying around, I just grabbed a piece and had Travis cut it into three different sizes and drill a hole in each corner abut 1″ in from each side.

I chose a pretty thin board because I wasn’t putting anything heavy on it, but if you plan to, choose a thicker board.

I white washed the boards to lighten them just a bit, and after dry they were ready to hang with jute.

Figuring out how to hang them straight was the hardest part. First, I took all four strings and wrapped them around the wooden ring that I used to hang them on the wall.

Then, measured out each side equally and marked where they needed to be knotted with red pin. First I did the back two, the ones sitting closest to the wall, then I did the front two, making sure the board would lay flat against the wall.

The nice part about not knotting the jute around the wooden ring is that if your shelf turned out a bit uneven you can loosen the string around the ring and readjust until it’s even on both sides.

That’s it guys! So dang simple. If my instructions are at all unclean on any part please let me know by sending me a DM over on Instagram. I’d love to answer any questions you have!
