How it works!

After reading my fall post, you’ll head on over to This Dear Casa and see what Marie is cooking up in her DIY. We all have no idea what the other gals will share until the day of, which makes it so fun. I’ll be hopping all the blog posts too! And if you’re coming here from Robyn’s French Nest, welcome! I’m so glad you decided to visit! I’ve got a fun, easy fall front porch for you today!

How To Make A Fall porch | The Ingredients

To make a great porch, you just need a few basics.

  • Pumpkins (faux or real)

I love a good mixture of both! I’ve slowly been adding to my faux pumpkin stash, so I always have a few to start with. Of course, I love real most, but I find that if I mix the two together it works great and saves on cost.

  • Mums or other fall floral

Mums are one of my fall favorites. They smell amazing, come in so many beautiful colors, and are so full of blossoms. Another of my top picks is cabbages. Those purple and mint green ones get me every time.

  • Lanterns or other lights/candles

I mean, is it fall without candles? I’ll answer that for you. Nope. Lanterns or glass votives make great additions to your fall porch. Also twinkle lights. Get some! I have these flameless outdoor candles and love them!

  • Sign that says fall or has another saying

I made my fall sign a few years back, and when you turn it around it says Merry Christmas. Hang your sign of choice above the door, lean in on the wall, or weave it into your decor. Get creative!

  • Layered mat

I love a good layers mat. A black checkered under a cute jute rug makes a great statement piece. It also makes the rug seem larger, which is ideal because most rugs are too small for front doors.

  • Wreath

I made the wreath below last year and it’s still one of my favorites to date. Wreaths are a must to warm up your porch, and welcome friends and family into your home. They’re eye level, and one of the first things a person will take in when walking up.

  • A fun accent piece.

I like to add a little something fun to shake up the typical porch spread. One year I used part of a horse harness from the early 1900s. This year, I’m using a mini old wheelbarrow the kids play with, and it’s adorable.

That’s about it! Just a few staples and you’re ready to start!

First off, you need to start with a clean slate. Remove any old decor, sweep clean, and if needed, power spray the landing and steps. Dust and clean porch lights, and do a general sweep of the area, removing and cleaning anything that needs it.

Start with floral

I love to begin with the floral, it’s what holds the decor together. It also adds a lot of height, so you want to start there so you know how to position your pumpkins and other decor.

Next, add in the pumpkins

From there, add in your pumpkins. Play with the shapes and colors, moving them around until they look perfect. Stack them, lean them, the sky’s the limit. I really try to hit the containers of the mums, unless they’re wooden and adorable. I feel it flows a bit more that way.

Accent pieces, wreath, and rugs

Go ahead and add in your wreath, and pair of rugs. Stand back and find the holes. Is that where you want to add your lanterns and accent pieces. Usually, I like one on beside the door, and one on the opposite side of the porch, near the bottom of the stairs or beginning of the entrance. Working in triangles is pleasing to the eyes, so it’s great to off-center things,

Stand back and take in your new porch! It’s beautiful! I also find that a fall porch like this transitions well into Halloween decor. Add a few ghosts, some bats, a witch’s hat or skeleton and suddenly fall becomes spooky!

To see a fun take on that, check out my post on how to add spiders to the outside of your house they’re huge, fuzzy, and so fun! The kids and I had a blast with them last year and plan to add even more this time around!

Now, make sure to head to This Dear Casa and check out her post, and keep going from blogger to blogger until you end back here. Then you know you completed the circle!

Thanks for hopping with me friends! See you again soon!
