I’ve felt uncomfortable in my body since having my daughter. Sad, but true.

I’m a runner. I eat healthy and try to follow a paleo-ish diet. Dairy is limited and I stay away from processed foods. But it wasn’t helping my extreme fatigue or my problem losing weight.

“You simply need to work out harder and dial in your diet.” I was told.

A month later: “Still not dropping pounds? Well, you must be doing something wrong.”

Another month goes by: “Huh, we’re missing something here, or you’re not writing everything down. You must be consuming too many calories.”

“Run more and incorporate strength training.”

“Keep your calories under 1,600 a day”

And on and on. That was my life the past two years with adrenal fatigue. Cross Fit, Spin Class, 21 Day Fix, running until I couldn’t run anymore. Every diet imaginable. Believe me, I tried it all.

Diagnosed with Adrenal Fatigue

Adrenal Fatigue definition:

Adrenal Fatigue is a stress-related condition that results in symptoms like exhaustion, weakened immunity, sleep disturbances, and weight loss resistance. The adrenal glands become depleted and dysregulated after a long period of emotional stress, chronic illness, or over exercising.

Adrenal Fatigue leads to lower levels of a number of hormones and neurotransmitters, changes that can affect every single part of your body. Every individual with Adrenal Fatigue tends to have a slightly different set of symptoms, although there are always common complaints.

Granted, I didn’t realize I had adrenal fatigue until this past spring. But, even being aware of my problem and starting a supplement regimen given to me by my naturopathic doctor, I didn’t “feel well.” I’ll admit my fatigue improved some, but the disappointment I felt two months after implementing my wellness plan was evident to those close to me.

And so, as happened every so often when it all got to be too much, I’d sit on the edge of my bed in the dark, tears streaming down my cheeks. Another day where I could barely keep my eyes open, donning my husband’s shirt again because all mine felt tight. And I cried. Cried because I wasn’t the mom I should be. So tired it was a struggle to do anything beyond the basics. And I’d shed tears for the person I use to be. The happy girl who felt good and was 20 pounds lighter than the girl sitting here, feeling broken, betrayed, and angry. My body was fighting against me. It was thwarting any effort I tried to improve my health.

I’m so tired

I remember my husband coming home one evening asking about my day and without even thinking I rattled off a few things and then ended with “I’m so tired.” He looked at me and snapped, “You’re always tired. Always.”

I was hurt. His words stung. I didn’t want to be this way. I didn’t want to feel like this. And moreover, I didn’t think it was normal. I get that moms are always a bit on the tired side. But I knew, deep down this was more than normal. I hid my problem well. I would get on instagram and throw out some motivational quote, then talk about embracing my curves and loving my journey. But it was a lie. I was lying to myself and those on social media. Part of me hoped that by putting that positivity out there I would somehow become positive. It didn’t work. I was struggling and very few knew it.

Instagram stocking

As happens very often with Instagram, I got sucked down a rabbit hole one day and ended up on Amanda Tress’s account. She had created a program and was showing jaw dropping results achieved by many women. I was intrigued but skeptical. I mean let’s be honest, who isn’t these days? Everyones shouting from the rooftops they’ve found “the way” to lose weight.

I followed Amanda for over a year and a half but could never commit to her program. It was so different than the other programs I’d tried in the past. Then again, I began to wonder if that’s what I needed. She talked about intermediate fasting, and I’d been told by many that it wasn’t healthy. Eat your breakfast. Have several small meals a day. Don’t let yourself get hungry. These were the common tips health and fitness gurus would give. But, what they said never worked for me.

Diet pills and the FASTer way

The more I followed Amanda the more doubt began to surfaced that maybe, just maybe, the others were wrong and she was onto something. In a last ditch effort to avoid her program I bought diet pills off Amazon. They were horrible. I would wake up with night sweats and have the jitters all day. And still I wasn’t losing weight. After two weeks of taking them, I had a come to Jesus moment. What the heck was I doing to myself? I threw the pills away, went into my office and registered for this crazy program called The FASTer Way To Fat Loss. (FWTFL) This was it, I told myself as I pressed the purchase button. I was going to give this program 110% and if it didn’t work I was done. Done trying. I would resign myself to feeling this way forever.

Would the FASTer Way work with adrenal fatigue?

I dove it and learned everything I could about the program. Especially how it worked for those with adrenal fatigue.

It’s thought that the intermediate fasting helps give time for your body to heal when food isn’t present. (This is the un-sciency, Eryn explanation of it all) And it made sense to me. Also, carb cycling helps reset your body. Most of us who have over-exercised, under-ate, or yo-yo dieted for years have thyroid issues regular tests don’t catch. We stress our bodies and don’t supply them with enough fuel, and our thyroids are one of the first things to wave the white flag. This program was so different than anything I tried in the past. It’s honestly revolutionary in it’s approach to health, weight loss, and healing the body.

What is The FASTer Way To Fat Loss?

The program is seven weeks total, the first week is prep week, followed by six weeks of sticking to the program. Intermediate fasting is daily through the whole program, (16 hours fasted, 8 hour eating window daily) and carb cycling. Essentially carb cycling is varying intake of carbs throughout the week. Some days are low carb days, others are higher. There are also printable workouts to accompany the program. Amanda has made several versions of workouts to fit everyones needs. Gym workouts, home workouts, and beginner workouts. Truly all basis are covered coved.

Each round everyone who registered for the program is put into a large FB group where Amanda does the live trainings. We are also separated into smaller groups with certified coaches who are there to answer all our questions and keep us accountable. We posted our macros nightly to the group where we are gently reminded and encouraged by the coaches to “Eat more carbs tomorrow”, or “Try to get more healthy fats in on low carb days”. I felt so supported. And the fasting, which seems super intimidating to start, became old hat fast.

I wake up daily and enjoy two cups of coffee. Each with one tablespoon of cream. Just enough to keep me below the 50 calorie limit you need to stay under in a fasted state. If possible, I try to workout fasted and once noon comes around I’m hungry and ready to dig into a satisfying meal. Amanda encourages no dairy or gluten your first round, and besides the cream in my morning coffee, I stayed pretty true to her requests.

Prep week and the first two weeks of the program

During prep week there was a daily Facebook post with instructions and tutorials, (If you don’t have Facebook don’t worry, you can still easily do the program. Just email the FASTer way team and they’ll place you on a daily email list.) including video on how to set up your macros, how to log into your website portal, access and print off the workouts, and everything else you’re worried about. Trust me, Amanda and her team have this down to a science.

I was honestly very nervous going into week two. I wasn’t constantly hungry. In fact, I felt full. A lot of the time. I was worried this couldn’t possibly work. I mean, I was satisfied. So how could it be effective? This revealed to me just how warped the fitness industry is. Everything is sacrifice sacrifice sacrifice, push though, no pain no gain. You think it’s suppose to be hard.

Never does anyone preach slow down, eat until you’re full, shorter workouts are okay, and my favorite,

“You don’t want to spend your life worrying about health. You want to be healthy enough to live your life free from worry.”

That was revolutionary to me.

My results

I dropped 10 pounds the first round and lost a total of 12 inches all over my body!

This is huge for the girl who couldn’t get the scale to budge in over two years. I cried the day I took my after photos. It was vindication for me. I knew I wasn’t meant to be in that body. I knew something was wrong, and thanks to The FASTer Way, I was able to begin the healing process.

These photos are not easy for me to share. In many ways I’m ashamed of my before. I have a hard time seeing how far my body went before I was able to figure out what was going on and correct it. Thankfully it’s just my before and not my forever!

Do you have to do more than one round?

Not at all! By the time you finish round one you have a good understanding of how the program works and can go it on your own if you want. All the workouts are printable and you can fly solo. It’s very normal for most to do a second round though. Amanda shares more each time you enroll and the community and ability to get your questions answered in each round is a gold mind. Hence why I’m hitting up round two!

Is this a lifestyle?

Yes! This is a way of eating and working out I can maintain forever. Truly. I no longer need a mid-day nap, I’m full of energy to sustain me well into the evening. I don’t feel hungry and I don’t feel cheated out of eating good food. Amanda encourages a treat every Saturday after the leg day in completed. Her favorite way to splurge is a donut and mine is a special baked good of my making!
