Welcome back to the farmhouse, friends! As we kick off a new year of homesteading, I’m always looking for ways to work smarter—not harder—while keeping things rooted in simplicity, and limited waist. Today, I’m sharing four incredible must have homestead products that are game changers.

And from the words of my dear friend Brooke Perwal: “You don’t need a farm to eat like you live on one.” These are products that anyone can use to elevate their food game.

These products are all available from Roots and Harvest. A company I love for their dedication to making farm and kitchen life more efficient. You could be a seasoned homesteader, just starting out, or cultivating a thriving backyard garden. Whichever way you’re doing it, these tools will help you save time, make the most of your harvest, and keep your kitchen running smoothly all year long.

Must Have Homestead Products

1. Electric Water Bath Canner

If you’ve ever been elbow-deep in a canning session while also trying to get dinner on the table, you’ll understand why I’m so excited about this tool!

Roots and Harvest’s Electric Water Bath Canner plugs into the wall, meaning it frees up your stovetop for other cooking needs. Whether you’re preserving jars of tomato sauce, pickles, or apple butter, this canner makes the process easier and more efficient.

Why You’ll Love It:

  • No more juggling canning pots and dinner pots.
  • A simple, plug-in design with precise temperature control.
  • Perfect for small kitchens where stovetop space is precious.

This has quickly become one of my favorite canning tools, especially when I’m prepping large batches of preserves in the fall. Check out this blog post about canning tomatoes to learn even more.

2. Vacuum Sealer

Raise your hand if you’ve ever struggled to keep your frozen veggies, meats, or leftovers fresh for more than a few months. Enter the Roots and Harvest Vacuum Sealer—a product I can’t live without for preserving food and preventing freezer burn.

This tool extends the shelf life of your garden produce, bulk meat purchases, and leftovers by removing all the air from your storage bags. It’s a huge money saver and helps you avoid food waste. I’ve found it incredibly versatile. This year, we even used it during our meat poultry harvest, perfectly portioning breasts and thighs for our typical meal sizes. It’s a game-changer for efficient food storage!

How It’ll Simplify Your Life:

  • Keeps food fresh up to 5x longer than traditional storage methods.
  • Saves freezer space by compressing stored food.
  • Works great for prepping meals ahead of busy weeks.

If you’re serious about stretching your harvest and cutting down on waste, this vacuum sealer is a homestead essential.

3. Food Dehydrator

Preserving food doesn’t get much easier than with a Food Dehydrator. From drying apples and herbs to making homemade jerky or fruit leathers, this tool offers so many possibilities!

One of my favorite things to do is dry extra basil, thyme, and oregano from my garden to create a custom herb blend for winter soups and stews. I’ve also experimented with dehydrating sliced citrus for tea blends and homemade decorations.

Why You’ll Wonder How You Ever Lived Without It:

  • A hands-off way to preserve fruits, vegetables, and herbs.
  • Great for snacks like kale chips, banana chips, and jerky.
  • Perfect for making lightweight, shelf-stable food for camping or emergencies.
  • Perfect for when you don’t have enough to can but still want to save and enjoy your harvest.

If you’re looking for a versatile, easy-to-use preservation tool, a dehydrator deserves a spot in your homestead kitchen. My favorite is this Big Bite dehydrator. It’s been a game changer for my preserving this past season.

4. Wheat Grinder

Alright, friends, here’s the one tool I haven’t fully incorporated into my routine yet, but I’m so excited about it that I had to include it here: a Wheat Grinder!

I feel like I’ve taken a different approach compared to many who start their whole foods journey by grinding wheat. For me, it’s something I’m diving into several years into this lifestyle. Maybe it’s because I grew up watching my mom grind wheat weekly and bake whole wheat bread all the time. It wasn’t as new or exciting to me as some of the other homesteading adventures have been.

As someone who loves baking from scratch, grinding my own flour is a goal I’ve set for 2025. Freshly milled flour is not only more nutritious, but it also tastes better and has a longer shelf life compared to pre-ground flour. Plus, there’s something so satisfying about turning wheat berries into beautiful, fluffy flour in your own kitchen!

What I’m Most Excited About:

  • The ability to grind grains fresh for each recipe.
  • Experimenting with ancient grains like einkorn and spelt.
  • Taking my sourdough baking to the next level with freshly ground flour.

I’ll keep you updated as I start using this wheat grinder more regularly—follow along to see the recipes I create with it!
