I’m so excited to share this new to me treasure, The Land of Storybooks monthly subscription box. Finding new books for read aloud is so important in our home and something we all look forward to. And if they come with crafts and activities? Well, that’s even better!
I first heard of The Land Of Storybooks from another homeschool mama, though you definitely don’t have to be a homeschool family to enjoy books for read aloud!
New to the read aloud world and want to know more? Sure!
Read aloud is basically an instructional practice where teachers or parents read books to children aloud. We often incorporate variations in reading the text that includes pitch, volume, eye contact, and stopping to ask questions and make sure the children are grasping the reading material.
Read alouds allow us to show fluent reading of text to young readers. This gives them free rein to focus on comprehension, learn new vocabulary, and be exposed to literature they are too young to grasp reading alone. It’s also a great time to bond as a family.
Yes, we’ve done lots of read alouds alone, without a subscription, and will continue to do so. But, this is such a fun way to bring a book alive with extra activities, recipes, and crafts. Physical activities help cement ideas and stories into children’s minds.
The Basics of The Land Of Storybooks Subscription Box
- One middle-grade novel that appeals to ages 6-12 when read aloud and focuses on rich, imaginative stories that promote values and good moral character.
- Two craft projects for two children (expansion packs can be purchased for larger families)
- An adventure guide to help get the most out of each book which includes craft and recipe instructions as well as scavenger hunt ideas and a book discussion guide.
- Sealed vintage-looking letter that transports your kids into the story of the month!
- An optional list of additional books that correspond with the one they sent.
Opening the experience
The kids (and myself, who’s joking here) were so excited to open this package and see what this month’s story and crafts were. They give you small hints the month prior, but don’t share the book title until it arrives at your door. Like a mini Christmas morning each month when its delivered.
July is the heart of summer, and with that, they wanted to focus on stars. How fitting. Who doesn’t associate a summer evening with a sky full of stars? And better yet, now a story to correspond with it.
The sealed letter was such a joy to read to the kids. I could see the excitement building in their eyes as we got to the end, eagerness setting to start the book right away!
And the crafts . . . they’re just perfect. So creative yet easy for the kids to do. As a parent, I’m thankful they came with everything you’d need, down to the paintbrushes and stir sticks.
The Adventure Guide covers everything, including the craft instructions. It also has many additions you can choose, or not choose, to do based on your kids’ ages and attention span. I personally loved the recipes that were included, which were treats those in the book had consumed. Just another way to feel an even bigger connection to the story.
