Why a home workout (& running) junkie started CrossFit

Wait Eryn, you loved your home workouts. Why did you start CrossFit?!?

I’ve been getting sooooo many questions and quizzical looks about starting CrossFit that I thought, why not address them all in a quick post!

The question I get asked the most is “I thought you were all about those home workouts?” I was! And honestly, still am! I’ll never downplay the role home fitness has had on my health. It’s all I’ve ever done. And with it I’ve been able to reach my goals over and over again. It’s the foundation of my health.

I did Turbo Jam in my parents basement with my mom and sister growing up four days a week,  prepped for my wedding with P90x, used PiYo to help me drop the baby weight after Tyrion was born and as part of my half and full marathon training programs. I used the 21 Day Fix after having Evelyn. And when Beachbody started BOD (their On Demand platform) that streams (from any device) all the workouts + programs and meals plans, I did that too! I’m who I am because of the fitness programs I’ve used and loved over the years. So why now, why this moment, have I decided to add CrossFit into the equation?

Well, I’m glad you asked!

Reason #1 Upping My Game

Dang right! It’s time to push harder!

I have loved what I’ve been able to teach myself and learn on my own, now I want to see what working out with others who are super motivated can do. The kids are older and easier to manage, and now I have some time to do some fitness outside the home. This is one of the reasons I’ve also taken up spinning. I’ve been feeling comfortable over the past few months with what I’ve been doing fitness wise, and I know for growth, when I’m comfortable it’s time to shake things up again!

Reason #2 CrossFit instead of a typical gym

I’ve played the gym game before. Didn’t love it. I wanted something a little more involved, with a little more accountability. After researching, CrossFit was the best bang for the buck. Like having a personal trainer but not as pricy. I weigh weekly at my box, calculate how much muscle I’m gaining and fat I’m losing, they even go as far as to have us print off our weekly eats so they can analyze them and critique what needs improved. Personal trainers go for $400 plus a month. No thanks! I have kids to feed!

Crossfit at my box for a three month sign up, three days a week, was $127. Much more doable for us. I’ll go three times a week, and the other 2-3 days I’ll do running and BOD. I have a app I log into each time I workout, and it helps me record my weights and times so I know if I’m improving or not. Seriously I’m very impressed with how all encompassing and goal oriented CrossFit is.

Reason #3 What CrossFit does for the body

CrossFit is constantly varied functional movements performed at high intensity. All CrossFit workouts are based on functional movements, and these movements reflect the best aspects of gymnastics, weightlifting, running, rowing and more. These are the core movements of life. They move the largest loads the longest distances, so they are ideal for maximizing the amount of work done in the shortest time. Intensity is essential for results and is measurable as work divided by time—or power. The more work you do in less time, or the higher the power output, the more intense the effort. By employing a constantly varied approach to training, functional movements and intensity lead to dramatic gains in fitness.

I follow several CrossFitters on IG and their bodies are #GOALS! I love the strength they exhibit and how they can “do it all”. They are very well proportioned muscle wise.

Reason #4 I’m trained like an athlete

CrossFit isn’t all about lifting heavy, it’s very much about form and getting the most out of each move, not expending energy when it’s unnecessary, so you can give the most when it’s needed. It’s also about performing at a high intensity safely.

You won’t get away with only performing your “favorite” workout moves and calling it a day, ending up with a great upper body but having undefined chicken legs, or vice versa. You don’t walk into a CrossFit box like a gym, rep out on a bunch of different machines and hope you’re doing what you need to achieve your goals. With CrossFit, you know without a doubt if you put in the time you’ll get the results because you have people working with you that know how to get you there!

Reason #5 CrossFit is about community

I want cool friends that motivate me to push past my preconceived limits. I want to be around athletes that show me daily that I can achieve more. If I’ve learned anything from my past two years diving into personal development, it’s that to achieve your goals you need to be around others who can teach you. And this is the spot.

    1. Right? I thought it would be impossible to commit as well but our box has lots of different times throughout the week, and now that the kids are older it’s easier to leave them with Dad and not be worried they will overwhelm him after a stress filled day at work. Plus it’s close to our house which was really important to me, I didn’t want a long commute to work out. An hour and ten minutes and I’m back walking through the door.

  1. Awesome girl, you go! I did crossfit for a little while and then had my son and had to go back to working out in the home. I now have two small children and can’t go to the gym unless my husband is home so I bought gym equipment to use at home. I know someday I will be back in the gym but for now, I’ve made it work. Mamas know how to do it!

    1. Dang right we do! I’ve loved doing home workouts for the past four years. I’d have been lost without them!

    1. HIIT workouts are some of my favorites. I did Turbo Fire for a while and she has a ton of HIITS throughout her workouts.
