Charcoal is seriously amazing stuff. I’ve used it in our home for years and we’ve been reaping the benefits. When I saw that NOW® was coming out with a charcoal skincare line I was giddy with excitement. I’ve been using it for almost a month and let me tell you, it does not disappoint.

My sensitive skin
I’ve had skin problems all my life, starting in my early teens. When I was younger I held onto the hope it would clear up once I hit the mid-twenties. Sadly, the twenties flew by with not much improvement. In fact, each time after childbirth the skin on my face would break out in hives and a rash so badly I would have to stay home for long periods of time until it healed. It was painful.
Whenever my body has issues it seems to manifest itself through my skin. I have to use special shampoo otherwise my scalp and upper back break out. Any area the culprit shampoo and conditioner touches. Also, I have to limit dairy as that makes it worse. Slowly, over the years I’ve been able to improve my skin to a degree. Still though, it’s a not 100% and I suffer with breakouts more often than I care to admit.
When NOW® Solutions said they were adding to their already great skincare line, I was curious. When they said it was a charcoal skincare line? That sealed the deal. When my items arrived I opened them excitedly, not sure what to expect.
Activated charcoal has been used for years to help with nausea and common digestive complaints. Read all about how I incorporate it into our health routine in this post.
I break open the tabs and pour the contents into applesauce for my kids to help with mild upset stomachs. When used for the husband and I, we simply take a few tabs at a time every few hours until improvement is felt.
Charcoal and your skin
For skin, charcoal assists in drawing out bacteria, poisons, chemicals, dirt and other micro-particles to the surface of skin. This helps achieve an improved complexion.
This formula cleanses my face so well. It lathers great and really pulls all the makeup and gunk from the day off, leaving my skin smooth and happy, ready for moisturizer.
The lotion is a perfect consistency. It goes on smooth and dries quickly, leaving my face feeling moisturized. Not tight and dry, or the opposite and almost worse option, greasy. This is a biggie for me because with my sensitive skin the line between dry and greasy is fine.
Before using these products I had been buying the Clinique Moisture Surge Intense cream as it was the only lotion my face seemed to tolerate. Thankfully this new line hasn’t caused any issues and I no longer have to spend $50 every two months on just my moisturizer.
The mask is my guilty pleasure. I put it on weekly and the kids know it’s “mommy time.” I leave the mask on for about 20 minutes and do a bit of reading, maybe paint my nails, or whiten my teeth. It’s a small chunk of time but it’s nice to relax knowing my skin will be glowing when I go to rinse it off.
Though my skin isn’t perfectly clear, it definitely feeling pretty good lately. Whenever I try something new I hold my breath, because more often than not it causes a rash or breakouts. I’ve gotten into a routine with my skin and try not to deviate from the normal very often. However, after a week of using the charcoal products my skin acted no differently, actually it seemed to improve slightly. As of today I’m going on a month of use. Believe me, I’m happy to switch from my hundreds of dollars in skincare every few months down to under $50 for all three of these charcoal products. I also use the NOW® Solutions Purifying Toner, as well as their Nature’s Microdermabrasion. If you’ve been thinking of switching up your skincare, I’d definitely give NOW® Solutions products a try.
