Happy 1st day of summer!!!! (AKA: Time to commence summertime reading!)
Summertime is truly my favorite time of the year. I like fall, winter is okay, spring is better, but summer? Summer reigns in my books. It’s when both of my kids were born, when I was born, and when Travis and I got married. It’s a crazy, happy, memory filled time. But, with all the hustle and bustle it’s also a time I try to slow down a bit, because it always seems to go too fast! One of my favorite ways to slow down is to immerse myself in a good book. I’ll get the kids set in their pool, happy giggles drifting across the yard as stray water sprays in every direction. I lay down on a large town and dive into a book as the sun warms my back. It’s perfect. And since I’m not the only one who loves to read, I thought I’d share my summertime reading list with you. It’s my goal to get through five books by fall!
Before I dig into my book list, I wanted to touch briefly on the hot hot hot coconut oil issues that blew up last week!
I was going to do a post on it myself, but there’s so many good ones out there I thought I’d just link to them here. My take on coconut oil? It’s amazing in moderation. But isn’t moderation the key to most things?
- Melissa Hartwig, Author and creator of The Whole30 wrote a great rebuttal on Facebook.
- Melissa McAllister, on her blog Melissa Made also had an honest take.
- Kelley Bouchard, my lovely friend and fellow boss babe wrote this yesterday. Another great read.
I will not stop using coconut oil. As I continue to dig into the paleo lifestyle the more it’s apparent just how much the government tries to lead us astray. Because big biz and dollar signs. As Author Diane Sanfilippo, of Practical Paleo writes in her book,
“… The opposition to changes to the Dietary Guidelines and Dietary Goals from food companies and agriculture groups is often not based on science but on how the guidelines would affect their bottom line.”
It’s not about food, it’s about companies making money.
And speaking of this book, it leads me into my first recommendation:
Summertime Reading List
I like to have a diverse mix of books to read. A few for learning, some for pure pleasure, and still others for self improvement. Because well rounded reading can change you and thus the world. It’s true. I have no stats, but you should still believe me. 😉
I started it only yesterday but already find myself in a deep, committed relationship. Practical Paleo is exactly what I needed. I love Whole30, but for some reason this seems to make even more sense to me. I mean, it’s the same basic principles, but I love her knowledge and approach. I’m on page 59 and already blown away. Because of what I’m reading I want to try my husband on a gluten free diet. He won’t go paleo yet, but gluten free is a start. So many of the issues she says are food related my husband has, so we’ll start with cutting that first.
More than doing it “just because” she talks the science of why. Like how grain products contain phytates, which bind to minerals and keep them from being absorbed by our bodies.
Can’t wait to see what other treasures I learn from Diane!
The second book is on the self improvement list:
I’m only a couple pages into this gem but can already tell I’ve found a winner. And hey, is it weird I get excited over adult books with illustrations? Really, it makes my day. I mentioned yesterday on my IG stories that I’m very visual and illustrations simply make me happy.
Any book that causes me to look inward on how I can improve my view on life and solve my outward problems is a page turner. I’ll be bawse’n it up over here this summer!
A combo of both self improvement and learning, this next book is on my favorites list.
I’ll be honest, I started this book in February and life happened, so it was placed on the back burner, and I never finished it. But, I’m excited to dust it off and begin again because it’s jam packed with important info about muscle building. Michael combats a lot of myths that have been floating around the fitness world for a long time now, and shows a proven system and mindset to achieve your goals.
Speaking of meeting people in the health and fitness industry, who’s going to IDEA World Convention in Vegas next month? We almost decided to book for this year, but some things came up so I’ll have to put it off for one more year. It’s been a dream of mine to attend for a while now. But hello, that’s totally off topic!
Onto book four, which is in the pleasure category, and way more than one book!
Who else is freaking excited that the new season starts next month?!? Eeek!!!! However, I stand firm that books are 99% of the time better than the movies or series that subsequently follow. So, I’m ready to dive in and although there’s almost no way I’ll be completing the whole series this summer, I’d like to finish the first book at least.
